"Nothing exists except atoms & empty space; everything else is opinion"-Democritus
"The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking and we thus drift toward unparalleled catastrophe." - Albert Einstein

John Dalton

Dalton the British Chemist

   Born: September 6,1776 & Died: July 27, 1844
John Dalton, a chemist, physicist, and meteorologist, created the atomic theory by the knowledge of his studies.Since he had an interest in weather,he questioned the concept of water particles and air particles inhabiting the same space at the same time. With this uncertainty, he began experimenting with gases. Dalton experimented with nitric acid(NO) and oxygen(O), thus creating a new gas(NO2).After a series of experiments with gases, Dalton discovered the "Law of Multiple Proportions" where the weights of elements always combine with one another in ratios such as 1:1, 2:2,etc.,however this is later proved invalid. However, most of his conclusions from the experiments became the foundation of chemistry & changed many people's perspective on science . Dalton's theory of Atomic Theory is stated as:
-All atoms in an element are identical.
-Atoms that make up matter are indivisible and indestructible.
-Atoms cannot be created or destroyed. When a compound is decomposed, the atoms are recovered unchanged.
-Atoms of different elements have different weights and different chemical properties.
-Atoms of different elements combine in simple whole number ratios to form compounds.
